The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
